There have been reported incidences where improperly cleaned endoscopes were cited in cross infection of blood born diseases. This highlights how important quality endoscopy filters and other medical filters are. Some filters – sediment filters, for instance – are designed to remove silt and grit that will damage and shorten the life of the endoscope. But to help protect the patient, a second stage filter, called a bacteria retention filter, is needed to remove bacteria from the wash and rinse water.

Bad Endoscopy Filters? Investigating HIV Case
Bad Endoscopy filters may have caused multiple cases of HIV. The associated press recently reported that improperly cleaned endoscopes were linked to the spread of HIV in several VA hospitals. Now Congress is now investigating to see how widespread the infections may be.
A congressional panel will question Department of Veterans Affairs officials about mistakes that put patients at risk of possible exposure to HIV and other infectious body fluids at three VA hospitals. read more . . .
